I love the madness that surrounds St. Patrick’s Day. How can I not? I am a Patrick after all! Every year on March 17, the globe goes green, quite literally, and comes to life through the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. It is not a modest ‘oh-I’ll-sit-at-home-and-drink-tea’ kind of holiday. It gets crazy. Crazy fun and not just here in Nairobi, but all over the world.
Here are a few places that celebrate St. Patricks Day in the ways you wouldn’t have thought of.
St. Patrick’s Day is really big in Chicago. They have a parade to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Parade always occurs on a Saturday. If St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t fall on a Saturday, the parade is held the Saturday before. Talk about commitment. The coolest part about St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago is how they dye the Chicago River green! Too cool! Though I think they borrowed that idea from our Nairobi River. But that’s none of my business hehe!
Nobody goes as hard as our good friends over in Dubai. It is a wonder in itself and since they like to stun the world every now and then, they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day through one of their most iconic landmarks. The Burj Al Arab. In past St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the Burj Al Arab goes green. So if you are rolling down in a Rolls Royce enjoying the scenic route, you might just spot the Burj Al Arab in all its splendour.
Pyramids Of Giza, Egypt
Up north in Egypt, the pharaohs like to wake up from their deep sleep and have a drink or two as the Great Pyramids of Giza go green. This wonder of the world will be lit in green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Giving it life throughout the night as it glows for all the Irish across the world.
Despite the many jokes about them being down under, the Opera House in Sydney will shift from its usual white and glow green this St. Patrick’s Day. There are lots of Irish pubs in Sydney so you can still get your Irish luck on if you can’t get to Dublin for the real deal.
Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
I’ve always wondered, does the tower lean forwards or backwards? Depends on the angle you view it from I guess. Every St. Patrick’s Day the Leaning Tower of Pisa gathers its bagpipes, plays some Irish music and goes green!
Wherever you are around the world, have a whale of a time as you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
