Healthy Smoothies Your Kids Will Love!

Lets face it, getting kids to eat their vegetables and fruits can be a daunting task especially when they have sweet teeth and the only things they love are junk food and sugary treats. Getting your child to eat healthy is even more difficult these days and as a parent you have to be extra clever to sneak healthy treats in their meals without them knowing.

What better way to do this than with smoothies. These tasty drinks should be your go-to whenever you want the little ones to eat healthy. Filled with natural ingredients full of nutrients and minerals, smoothies are  a great way to ensure your child is eating healthy every day. Serve it up with a colourful straw and they’ll be hooked!

Here are some delicious, healthy recipes for smoothies your kids are bound to enjoy.

1) Orange Dream Creamsicle

This dreamy smoothie is a perfect one for breakfast as it is filled with Vitamin C. It’s very quick and easy to make and your kids will love its sweet taste. They will gulp it down and ask for more each and every day.

What you need

  • 1 orange peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1/4 cup of low-fat yoghurt
  • 2 tablespoons of frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ice cubes

Method

  1. Combine the following ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

2) Watermelon Wonder

This is one creative way of spicing up your watermelon. With this drink, you children will be hydrated all day giving them enough energy to play around and have fun. Comprising of only three simple ingredients this is a refreshing must try!

What you need

  • 2 cups chopped watermelon
  • 1/4 cup low-fat milk
  • 2 cups ice

Method

  1. Combine chopped watermelon and 1/4 cup of low-fat milk in a blender.
  2. Add 2 cups of ice and blend until the consistency of your desire.

3) Mango Madness

This rich smoothie is very easy to make and all you need are fruits you can find everyday at any farmers market. The kids will be craving for this everytime.

What you need

  • 8 ounces of juicy pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup of low-fat vanilla yoghurt
  • 1 large ripe mango peeled and chopped
  • 1 ripe banana sliced
  • crushed ice

Method

  1. To make this smoothie blend the pineapple, yoghurt, mango and banana until smooth. Then with the blender still running drop in the ice and blend until pureed.

4) Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie ‘The Elvis’

Based on the love Elvis had for peanut butter and bananas, this recipe lies somewhere between dessert and smoothies. You can play around with more ingredients such as chocolate which will make it taste like bananas dipped in chocolate fondue. You coud also freeze the bananas overnight and replace them with the ice.

What you need

  • 1/2 cup vanilla Yoghurt
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter ice

Method

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until combined and frothy.
  2. Serve immediately

5) Power Gold Smoothie

Just as the name suggests this drink is filled with Vitamins and is perfect to start the day. Giving this smoothie to the kids during breakfast will give them a healthy start to their day.

What you need

  • 1 cup of carrots
  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup 100% pure orange juice
  • 1 TBL honey
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek or vanilla yogurt
  • ice cubes

Method

  1. Steam carrots if not using a high powered blender.
  2. Blend carrots with pineapple juice until smooth.
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients to your blender and blend until frothy and smooth.
  4. Serve cold!
