5 Essentials For a Family Picnic

written by Fred Mwithiga 30th July 2015

I love picnics! When I was little, we’d go for picnics at the Arboretum every Sunday afternoon with the family and a couple of family friends. That was before the whole of Nairobi had discovered it. I haven’t been there in a while but I still do love me a good picnic. I’m pretty sure your family loves one too. The fresh air of the great outdoors, the trees and the amount of space at your disposal is a key ingredient for a great family outing. Add some great food and these ten essentials and your off to a great start.

1. Grill

Nothing beats grilling a couple of burgers and hotdogs for the family in a place that isn’t your backyard. It makes the meal feel more alive. With a few burger patties, a few hotdogs, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions and a charged up grill and you’re good to go! Lunch is served. Make sure you have paper plates and disposable cutlery with you. Don’t litter!

2. Fruits

A picnic is kind of like a five course meal in the woods. You can’t have a picnic without some fruits! Grab a few apples, oranges, mangoes, grapes and obviously whatever more you want and mix up a fruit salad.

3. Drinks and a cooler

You don’t wanna get parched to death out there. Make sure you have a bottle of water, some juice, and some alcohol just incase you want to make a few cocktails for the other adults. You obviously don’t want to get hammered so a light buzz and lots laughs to keep it going. Your cooler should come in handy when keeping your drinks cold

4. Ice Cream!

The ideal way to end your picnic is a bowl of your favourite ice cream. Sprinkle some oats on it and you have an amazing family dessert that everyone will enjoy. Keep in mind the weather though, you don’t want your little ones ending up with a flu.

5. Something sporty

When I say sporty, I mean two things: a ball or a bicycle. I don’t care which ball you get, but a ball is a must. A ball is the epitome of fun. Whether its a soccer ball, tennis ball or volleyball, you need something to either kick around or throw to each other. Board games are an obvious no. Unless its twister. Card games are excellent choice too!
