Cognac is a very delicious alcoholic beverage produced in the Charente department, which is close to Bordeaux on the West Coast of France.

This alcoholic brand was named after the town of “Cognac” in the center of Charente. It is produced by distillation of wine twice. Basically Cognac is brandy, but not your every brandy is a Cognac.

Here are 6 interesting facts you probably didn’t know and you might want know about Cognac as reported on Forbes.

It’s most often on allocation, mostly because of China

If 11% of China population drank one bottle of Cognac per year the entire Cognac region will not be able to produce of the liquid to meet the demand, this is according to a Hennessey spokes person.

This is Paradis

Most Cognac houses have a special cellar where they keep their oldest and their best and fine vintages. The name of this exclusive storehouse is known as Paradis.

The French don’t particularly like it.

Did you know only 3% of Cognac is consumed in France. The rest is exported. Scotch is actually much more popular than Cognac in France.

It’s basically Brandy

Is there really a main difference between Cognac and Brandy? As in for the likes of Tequila, Bourbon and Champagne? Not that much but for the Cognac label it can only be applied to a bottle if it was produced in a specific geographic region. For example the fittingly titled of a Cognac is from Western France.

How to read a Cognac label

Here are the 4 most common categories of Cognac, they are usually ranked by age, expense and quality. That is VS, VSOP, XO and Extra. With VS nobody would blink if you ask to try and mesh it with mixer of water. By the time you get to XO and Extra and their hundreds of thousands of dollars per bottle price tags, drinking it any other way then it will be viewed as a tragedy
