written by Winnie Wangui 11th September 2018

From pasta to pizza, prosciutto to tiramisu, Kenya has no shortage of restaurants serving Italian dishes. From those offering a fine dining experience to casual and cosy spaces, here are a few spots where you can take a culinary trip to Italy.

1. Bella Maria, Westlands

Nestled deep amongst the tall trees of the Peponi Valley, Bella Maria’s Little Italy serves up crusty brick oven pizzas, comforting pasta and risotto dishes, freshly brewed teas and coffee. Relax over a light lunch of pasta or order a pillowy pizza while sipping on glasses of wine and catching up with friends or family in this surprisingly delightful and lush hidden corner of the city.

2. Mediterraneo, The Junction, Gigiri and 9 West, Westlands

Italian dishes with a twist are what you will find at Mediterraneo. The Gigiri branch especially provides a serene garden seating area offering a relaxing ambiance at any time of the day. Their menu features a variety of dishes including seafood, lamb, pork, chicken and vegetarian meals as well as desserts including chocolate mousse, coffee flavoured Bavarian cake and more.

3. La Dolce Vita, Muthaiga Mini Market

After being closed for renovations, this intimately designed restaurant recently re-opened, offering a fresh new look. The Italian name translates to mean “ The Sweet Life” and the restaurant’s menu strives to balance the traditional with the modern, combining Italian classics like crab fettuccine with ingredients like dill that bring out the flavour in new and unexpected ways.

4. Colosseum, Two Rivers and Westlands

Have a taste of the Pinsa, a classic Italian dish available at Colosseum and enjoy a unique experience. Their menu features Italian pastries, homemade ice cream and a wide selection of Italian wines. The restaurant is named after the iconic structure of the Colosseum in Rome which features all across the establishment’s décor.

5. Mambo Italia, Lavington and Garden City Mall

Decorated with reclaimed dhow furniture, Mambo Italia is a place where you can feast all your senses. Indulge in a light business lunch or enjoy a fun night out as you tuck into their sharing platters with your friends and family.

6. La Cantina Ristopizza & Wine, Ngong Rd

Owned by popular Italian chef, Chef Dario, La Cantina offers a creative Southern Italian menu. The cosy ambiance is reminiscent of a small family-run restaurant you would find in the south of Italy. Word on the street is that the tiramisu is to die for.

7. Pomodoro, Village Market

Having been around for over twenty years, Pomodoro offers a specials menu which changes daily with their ricotta ravioli being a definite favourite with its frequent customers. They do an excellent job at serving good, simple food that is also pocket-friendly.

8. Trattoria, CBD

Trattoria is one of the romantic spots in the CBD where a seat on the balcony frames the city’s energy in a magical way. This family-run restaurant was established in 1981 and has been offering a little Italy experience since then. Their ambiance is perfect for an intimate dinner or to just wind down your evening with a glass of wine.
