A Guide to Simple Wine Pairings with Vegetarian Dishes

written by Sonali Sumaria 17th June 2019

“Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.” ― Paulo Coelho

I’m neither a connoisseur of fine wine nor a food expert but I absolutely love the two. However, I don’t give much thought when selecting my wine and pairing it to the dish I order. Whenever we see a wine guide, the suggestions are always something in the line of “.. red wine with meat, white wine with chicken or fish…”.  That definitely doesn’t mean that you can’t pair vegetarian dishes with wine. We’ve selected a few popular dishes around Nairobi restaurants and added in suggestions of what wines to have with them!

Margherita Pizza at Mediterraneo Restaurants

There is no better combination than Italian food and wine. Duchessa Lia Fragolino Rosé is an absolute favourite and the best thing about it? It tastes great with a good Italian pizza.

Peach and Citrus salad at Harvest Restaurant

This salad is perfect for those quick light lunches. It can be paired with a light white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc. The salad dressing brings out the fruitiness of the wine.

Green Thai curry at Zen Garden

With this weather, sometimes (or all the time) all you crave is a good curry. A rich white wine like a Chardonnay works well with the aromas and spices of Thai dishes. This is another awesome wine pairing with a vegetarian dish.

Diwani Haandi at Haandi Restaurant

If a Thai curry isn’t spicy enough, then a good Indian curry might just do the trick. A spicy vegetable curry can pair well with a sweet white wine like a Riesling. The bright acidity pairs well with the richness of the curry.

Vegiko Sushi Platter at The Phoenician

Japanese food tends to have a perfect balance of sweet, sour, salt, umami and bitter flavours. You can pair your sushi with a refreshing sparkling wine.

Fresh homemade burrata at Chez Sonia

You don’t always need food as an excuse to order a glass (or bottle) of wine. This wine bar is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon catching up with friends or to share a late night bottle of your favourite. With so much choice, let the waiters or Sonia herself guide you through the wine menu.

Moles with the Encacahuatado sauce at Fonda NBO

If you don’t really want to think about what wine to have with every dish you order, Fonda’s menu is perfect as it suggests what wine to have with each dish! Problem solved!
