Prepare to taste bona fide Italian culture in this delicious dessert: the Zuccotto. Mediterraneo Ristorante, Nairobi’s favourite authentic Italian restaurant, is offering their interpretation of this Italian dessert at all their branches.
The Zuccotto, which has it’s roots deep in Florence, is a semi-frozen (semifreddo), chilled dessert made with brandy, cake and cream. Quite often, the Zuccotto is made in a pumpkin-shaped mold to give it a dome look when finished. This dessert is believed to have been inspired by the Duomo Cathedral in Florence. The word “Zuccotto” actually means “little pumpkin” in Italian.
The first semifreddo dessert in history was created in Florence by Buontalenti, the inventor of ice cream, who decided to try and use snow and ice to freeze a sweet cream.
