When it comes to international cuisines, finding a restaurant that makes authentic dishes can sometimes be a daunting challenge. The pace at which new restaurants are setting up in Nairobi causes competition to increase and restaurants have to up their game to ensure they retain their loyal customers as well as remain unique and interesting enough to attract new customers.
I recently had a craving for Chinese food and wanted to go to a restaurant that has been operating for a while. My search landed me at Double Dragon. For a restaurant that has been open for six years and is still among the top Chinese restaurants in Nairobi, it goes without saying that Double Dragon restaurant located on the 4th floor of The Junction has good authentic Chinese food.
I grabbed one of my friends and off we went on a venture to have our cravings satisfied. We arrived a little after 7PM on a Wednesday to find the restaurant hosting a few diners seated around the spacious establishment. Our arrival was welcomed by a jolly server who guided us to our table, took our drink orders and informed us that we would be having a chef-selected menu.
The menu highlights classic Chinese cuisine from thinly sliced braised meats served cold to pickled vegetable salads and delicately prepared seafood. Their array of meaty stews (pork, beef and chicken) are also a must-have if you are up for something hearty.
Our meals arrived in generous portions as if the chef knew how serious our cravings were. We had asparagus, lettuce with spring onion, crispy chilly crab, special beef pot with chillies and assortment of vegetables, pork spare ribs with potato and tomato soup and the chef’s special surprise: a fish dish with stir fried vegetables and red chilies.
We requested for a side plate of steamed rice to accompany the main course options. The crab meat was soft and sweet with a slight brininess to it. My favourite dish was the addictive beef pot; a comforting dish great for the cold weather and as a chili lover, the spiciness to this dish was perfectly balanced.
I recommend Double Dragon for that Chinese food-lover who wants to enjoy expertly prepared out of the ordinary Chinese dishes. Each dish has the signature Double Dragon touch guaranteed to keep you going back. Just make sure you go prepared with a large appetite and if you get there between 4:30pm to 7pm you get to enjoy the daily 25% discount on local beers, happy hour and a two for one offer on wine.
