Café Villa Rosa’s Nyama Choma Saturdays

written by Fred Mwithiga 25th May 2015

Kenyan’s love their nyama choma. I don’t think there’s any social gathering that is complete without nyama choma. From weddings, to children’s birthday parties, nyama choma is a staple social food. If I told you, that you could get your favourite ugali and nyama choma at Villa Rosa Kempinski, you might not believe me. Villa Rosa Kempinski might not be from Kenya, but they are proudly Kenyan. Where else would nyama choma with the ambiance of a 5 star hotel?

When me, and a couple of my mates, were invite by the good people over at Kempinski, we didn’t know what to expect. I honestly wondered how they would pull this off, I was a bit skeptic about the whole thing and how it would appeal to our very picky Kenyan market but hey, this is Kempinski, what can’t they pull of?

As soon as we arrived at Cafe Villa Rosa, the savory aroma of meat filled the air. Rich, meaty and slightly smoky, like a true nyama choma night. We started off with the salads. They had an all you can eat salad buffet the classic, kachumbari being present. Their salad bar would make any vegetarian go green with envy. They had a wide array including grilled tomatoes, corn on the cob and the mayor himself, ugali!

Once we had warmed up with our salads, the nyama choma arrived. It was a different kind of nyama choma. You normally don’t get prawns or seafood at your usual one do you? Well, they had lots of it. The chicken breasts were heavenly. Grilled chicken has always been my favourite, but the way they prepared it, gave me a whole new experience all together. The lamb chops, however, were the win of the night. Especially when coupled with their amazing fries and grilled tomatoes.

Their all-you-can-eat dessert selection was like joy to my sweet tooth. There was a wide assortment of mousses, fruit salad, tiramisu cake, lemon tarts and many other delectable treats that brought smiles to our faces.

A true nyama choma night is not complete without everybody’s favourite beer. For an extra Ksh.1500, you can get 5 Tusker beers for the price of three. Properly chilled in an ice bucket. If you have been looking for the ideal Madaraka day plan, or if you’ve been wanting to experience a truly Kenyan affair with all the luxuries of a five star hotel at a pocket friendly price, Cafe Villa Rosa has it all. Far much better than your local.
