Staff writer Lucy Munene checked out the newest health spot in Karen, Dojo Wellness Club.
Karen is a quiet and unassuming place that isn’t known as a vibrant hub. Well, that is slowly changing. Restaurants are opening up, more people are driving down to enjoy the new malls and now they have another reason to drop by. Dojo Wellness Club is a new gym and spa that has opened right next to Talisman Restaurant (so you can’t miss it!).
Dojo is a new world-class lifestyle and wellness club offering an energising escape to Move, Repair and Revive helping you #FindYourWay to wellness. Dojo offers a fusion approach to mind-body health and fitness through first-class coaching and mentoring in combat sports and natural movement with mobility, strength, function and endurance training integrating rehabilitation and rejuvenation.
Their three categories, Move Repair and Revive are what they use to classify the services they offer. Group classes, personal training and kids training all fall under the Move category while physiotherapy and massages fall under the Repair category. The smoothie bar and sauna fall under the Revive category and are both a great way to end your work out.
I was impressed as I walked in. The entrance is simple and unassuming but you can see the effort that went into putting the place together. The layout is well thought out. You walk in and find the front desk on your left, the changing rooms and bathrooms next, followed by what looks like an open plan gym. However, the gym is partitioned with glass panels giving the illusion of an open plan. As I looked around, I noticed that the boxing area and weight training area were right next to each other but you don’t have to worry about space, the area is so well planned out that both classes do not run at the same time so you never have to worry about being kicked in the face as you pump iron.
On that day, however, I was there to try out their Hatha yoga class. The class is held in a separate room that is adjacent to the boxing area but as we moved through each of our poses we were not bothered by any other noise around the gym. The room was well stocked with equipment for the class which included yoga mats, straps and blocks. The class was conducted expertly by Nyamwathi Gichau and after working up a sweat I used the changing rooms. The changing rooms are beautifully designed with spacious lockers, showers and a steam room. You almost don’t want to leave but once you’re changed and refreshed, you have the option of trying out their Smoothie Bar which offers a local, fresh, raw and mostly vegan menu.
