The Festival of African Fashion and Arts (FAFA) kicked off its 2013 campaign with the FAFA INSIGHT SHOW on June 8th 2013, held at Seven Grill & Lounge, Village Market.
This glamour-filled afternoon showcased the best of emerging designer talent. It is the culmination of an eight week process to bring together the most promising, innovative and passionate up-and-comers in the industry from around Kenya. Twelve designers made the cut, showcasing both fashion and accessories, with the theme for 2013 being ‘Beyond Tribes’ #Kenya at 50.
Each of the entrants were required to submit three creations, sketches of their proposed mini collection they would present at FAFA INSIGHT if selected and the inspiration behind the collection. Those shortlisted through to the fashion show have put together five looks that were showcased.
Winner Emerging Designer: Waithira Kibuchi
Her style is best described as ‘a cocktail of simplicity, a dash of daring and a distinctive flair for detail’. The concept for her winning collection is inspired by Joy Adamson’s ‘The People’s of Kenya’. It is contemporary Kenyan drawing references mainly from the draped garments of the pre-colonial era.
Runner Up: Eat Out’s own Ami Doshi-Shah for her jewellery collection that explores the innovative use of readily available materials.
The judging panel for the fashion and accessory collections included: Jamil Walji (winner of FAFA INSIGHT 2012), Pinky-Ghelani (celebrity), Eddie Kirondo (stylist), Hebret Lakew (Head designer of Kooroo) AND Helen Wandera (Representative from CBA Bank).
The winners of both the designer and model competition will go on to showcase their work at the elite FAFA finale Fashion Week in November 2013 alongside big name designers from across the continent. The winning designer will also have the opportunity to attend the CBA Business of Fashion Workshops for free.
Conceptualised by Ann McCreath, creator of Kenyan fashion label KikoRomeo and founder of FAFA, the objective of FAFA INSIGHT ‘is to draw attention to the creativity and sophistication that exists locally. We are geared towards inspiring creativity in Kenya and shining a light on the rich culture that exists’. FAFA INSIGHT is a hugely successful platform for emerging talent. Designers from previous years have gone on to develop commercially viable collections and gain significant exposure.
