On June 26 2018, Hennessy Global Brand Ambassador Monsieur Fabien Levieux made his maiden visit in the country where he discussed and presented the dynamic Hennessy Maison, it’s heritage, savoir faire and vision for the future. Yummy Magazine writer, Leroy Buliro caught up with him for a quick chat over a Hennessy cocktail
How do you like to take your Hennessy?
Hennessy XO, in a rock glass, 3 big ice cubes. Give it a couple of swirls and it’s good, especially as an evening drink.
Best part of your job?
Travelling around the world as I teach everyone about Hennessy that it’s not just a 40% alcoholic drink in a bottle. Hennessy is first and foremost an art of living. I educate people about the history of Hennessy and the Culture of Hennessy. I started with Hennessy almost six years ago but I have been in the cognac world for 20 years now and it’s been nothing but fun.
What the right way to have a Hennessy?
Great company, good time and responsible drinking. If you are a first timer don’t try it neat. You might be offended by the power of the alcohol or the strength of the flavours. Have it as a cocktail, mix it. Then try it neat if you like it or on the rocks.
Is there a special way to drink the different Hennessy bottles?
VS is simple, fruity and little bit oaky. It’s meant to be mixed with ginger ale, tonic water, apple juice, cranberry juice, whatever you want. It’s a mixer.
VSOP was created for royalty. For the royal court of England and in those days they loved balance. So we created a balanced cognac and it worked well. It goes well, neat, on the rocks, or as a classic cocktail like the sidecar.
XO is big, intense, robust, spicy almost manly type of cognac. For me, it will go nicely on ice
Your thoughts on Cognac and food pairing?
When it comes to cognac and food, it should be used as a spice. Have your big glass of water, your little tiny glass of cognac and food. Take a bite of the food, a little drop of the cognac and see how it multiplies the flavours. But as far as food pairing goes, we are barely scratching the surface. We’re just starting to discover new things.
Here’s a quick Hennessy Cocktail to mix up
- 100ml Hennessy VSOP
- 150ml Orange juice
- 50ml Ginger ale
- Lime wedge
In a cocktail glass half filled with ice, pour in the Hennessy VSOP, add the ginger ale and top with lime juice. Garnish with a lime wedge.
