I’ve always been looking for a reason to leave the house without breakfast but I never have. I value a good breakfast. I’d rather be late for work than miss my breakfast. Recently however, I took a pause on my usual muesli and decided to skip breakfast at home. Breakfast at Mambo Italia sounded more appealing. For one, I had always been looking forward to visiting Mambo Italia but something always came in the way. So when the opportunity came, I made sure nothing would ruin it. The new Mambo Italia at the recently opened Garden is a sight to behold. I personally think they have the best location in the entire mall with great views of Thika Road. If that doesn’t get you, then the furniture and interior décor definitely will. The chairs, the bar stools and even the lights above the bar are all made from old wooden canoes straight from the coast. The coastal Swahili influence mixed with their authentic Italian cuisine make for an excellent symphony. Simple yet elegant, peaceful yet vibrant, Mambo Italia is a piece of art in itself.
After soaking it all in, it was time to settle down for the long awaited breakfast. Eager, famished and excited, the menus were before us and we immediately racked our brains on what to order. My colleague, Devna ordered a Latte machiatto and I had a Nutella Hot Chocolate while we made our minds up about what we’d have for breakfast. The Nutella hot chocolate is out of this world. I had one sip and a smile lit up my face. It was rich, creamy, and not too sweet but just right. It was like a sip of heaven and I wouldn’t have minded five or so more cups. Our breakfast had arrived in all its hot glory. I decided to be adventurous and order something vegetarian for a change. I went with the spinach; mushroom and pecorino omelette and Devna had the Green Eggs, which consisted of poached eggs, pesto and ham on focaccia. To spice things up, we had the Nutella Mascarpone waffle stack.
Nish, proprietor and owner of the Mambo Italia restaurants joined us for breakfast. He’s a delightful fellow who is keen on providing authentic meals in a great space. He was having the Full Mambo, their take on the English breakfast but with a unique Italian twist. It comes with two smoked Italian sausages, mushrooms, baked beans, bacon, two fried eggs and grilled tomato. I dove straight into my omelette, not literally of course. It was undeniably the best I have ever had. The spinach and mushrooms were fresh, and prepared to perfection. Every bite felt better than the first and felt as delightful with every helping. We were all in love with our meals. I got to try a little bit of everyone’s orders and I wished I had an extra tummy. The green eggs were impeccable, especially with the focaccia and the pesto. The smoked Italian sausages are something else. Forget the sausages you buy at the supermarket. They aren’t nearly as great as the ones at Mambo Italia.
The cherry on the top was when we finally had the nuttela mascarpone waffle stack. To say that it was delicious is an understatement. The chocolate flavor of nutella and the waffles were the perfect match especially when I added some fruit salad to it. I could have stayed there all morning but I had a few meetings to attend. I was beyond satisfied, I was glad I skipped my breakfast at home.
If you’re ever in the area or want to explore Garden City, take exit 7 off the Thika Rd, and once you get to the mall, head to the food court on the first floor. Mambo Italia serve their breakfast every day from 7.30 am to 11 am. If you can’t do without breakfast, you should definitely give Mambo Italia a shot. You’ll want to have breakfast there all year round.
