Think back to the good old days. Back to the tasty chapatis your mum whipped up every Saturday evening for the family with that beef stew that made your soul sing. I bet you want some right now especially with this daunting weather don’t you? Cue the music and let me tell you about this little gem that takes you back to your roots.
Located at the Food Loft at Yaya centre, Nyama Mama is an unpretentious, fun, modern day African roadside diner preparing home style dishes with a modern eclectic twist. One look at their menu and your instantly at home – expect everything is a little more funkier. Take for example, their Ugali fries with garlic sauce. A delicious take on humble ugali that will make you fall in love with it even if you never were a fan. The garlic sauce is interesting and plays a flavourful role in the meal. But just like you, who would ever think garlic and ugali would go together? Mama clearly has some tricks up her sleeve.
Their entire menu will blow you away with their unique flavours. Where else are you going to get beef chapati quesadillas with kachumbari and guacamole? A simple beef and chapati meal gets a Mexican twist. The best of both worlds that will leave your pallet singing with joy. Make sure you try their pan fried Tilapia with chermoula and kachumbari. Probably some of the best tilapia you’ll have eaten in a while. The meat pulls off the bone helplessly, dripping with flavour and that subtle reminder of home that will have you ordering another and another.
Everything about them, is African to the core including their cocktails which come served in metal vikombes. How old school and Kenyan is that? And thats just the start. Their Blue Mount cocktail packs a delicious punch and it’s quite clear why. It features chilli infused Don Julio tequila, sparkling wine, fresh Aperol, pineapple and lime cordial. The chilli brings in it’s distinct flare to the cocktail breathing in life to it. You can taste every single ingredient in the cocktail coming together in one soothing symphony.
Dessert? Yes please! Who doesn’t love cheesecake? Their New York style cheesecake with berry compote is one you and your date would thoroughly enjoy. It’s light, has the right amount of sugar and the berry compote adds a delicious finish to it that will burst with flavour in your mouth.
I could go on and on about Nyama Mama. I could event write a song but you simply must try it. Check them out today and remember to write a review of your experience there!
