Quick Milanese Lunch At Mediterraneo

written by Winnie Wangui 21st July 2017

I’m a sucker for Italian food. Every time I have Italian dishes, I dream of casting aside my everyday life and running off to a villa in Tuscany to soak up perfect sun-dappled views. With a glass of wine in hand and a pasta bowl that never runs empty, That is all I ever wish for. Unfortunately, my dreams are often rudely interrupted by the reality that I am in Nairobi where the sun seems to have evaded us.

I love how bold and satisfying Italian food is – without being heavy. It is rich and features different textures and offers a whole palate of flavours. Mediterraneo restaurant is known for their delicious, authentic Italian food so you can imagine my joy when I got an invite from Mediterraneo at The Junction. On this day, I got to try out their ‘Quick Lunch’ menu which is prepared the Milanese way. It was a sunny afternoon and we chose to sit at the balcony.

The newly introduced quick lunch menu is meant for the individual who wants to have an easy and fast lunch and get on with the rest of the day. The menu comprises of chicken fish and vegetarian dishes accompanied with a variety of pasta. Italian food is enjoyed best with company so I rounded up three of my colleagues and we went to this little Italian haven for lunch.

The chicken dish consisted of chicken breast in breadcrumbs, spaghetti in tomato and basil sauce with a side of salad served with a tomato concassé. The second dish was the fish fillet in breadcrumbs with penne pasta in tomato and basil sauce with a side of salad served with tartare sauce. The vegetarian option was the eggplant and zucchini “Fritte” with farfalle pasta in tomato and basil sauce with a side of salad served with three dips-cocktail, tartare and spicy arrabiata.

The chicken and fish were light and fluffy and Executive Chef Giuliano Truddaiu, who came by our table told us the chicken, fish, eggplant and zucchini were only coated with egg yolk, milk and bread crumbs. The coating on all three meals was light and not too crispy. I enjoyed the salads, they were fresh and the balsamic vinegar addition added more zing to the meal. The pastas were filling and delicious thanks to the tomato and basil sauce.

The lunch was indeed quick- within one hour- we had cleared our plates and were ready to leave. The quick lunch menu is available from 12pm to 3pm on weekdays at the Mediterraneo Junction branch for only Ksh. 1000 per meal inclusive of a soda.
