Sometimes, there are moments when you feel a swelling of pride when it comes to living in Nairobi. When you overcome the horrendous traffic, the terrible state of our roads and a number of other inadequacies… there is a point when you can truly appreciate all the wonderful people doing special things in our city. The RDA Food Fair at the Talisman last weekend was one such moment. With over 20 vendors showcasing their wares from camel biltong to caramel cupcakes this intimate food fair felt more like a get together than the gigantic bazaars that Nairobi-ites are accustomed to.
It was all in aid of Riding for the Disabled, a small registered charity that gives special needs children and young adults the opportunity to strive to their full potential through a therapeutic horse riding programme.
The fair also served as a great opportunity to get to know the individuals behind the delicious food including Marvel Country foods, Bella Luna Bakery, Farmer’s Choice, Bryonny’s Banquets, Raka Cheese and many more.
I went with my 2 little terrors, so I didn’t stick around long enough to catch the winner of the coveted Chocolate Cup, but we did stay long enough for the kids to make and decorate their own cupcakes (a fabulous idea to get kids really involved in the fun bits of cooking) while I sipped on a perfectly chilled Big Five Simpils draft from Brew Bistro. A perfect afternoon spent for an even more worthy cause.
