In the Gaza Strip, where until recently deafness was considered a mental disability, a restaurant entirely staffed by deaf individuals is being opened.
Atfaluna is a stylish eatery that is breaking down the barriers for deaf people in the Palestinian society.
Run by the Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, staff of the restaurant has been trained for six months on how to best communicate with customers who don’t know sign language.
The restaurant hopes to run a smooth and effective system with diners ordering by pointing out their choices on a specially designed menu.
Difficulties are expected by the organizers to start with, however it is hoped the restaurant will help bring a shift in the perception of deaf people.
