Rum is the first ever branded spirit to be made, meaning it has been longer than most alcoholic drinks you partake.
It has medicinal products that were used by Armies during wars. The British Army used to give rum rations, mixtures of wine and rum to prevent their sailors from contracting scurvy which was common those days. It was known then as ‘tot o’ rum’ and by the help of a dash of lime further helped in preventing scurvy.
For the love of rum ,the Admiral Nelson who was killed during Battle of Trafalgar when he was being laid to rest his body was preserved in a cask of rum. Though this fact s disputed as to whether the cask was full or just empty that time . But it is wildly known Rum known as ‘Nelson Blood” after the incident.
Rum also has humble origins dated back to ancient China and India before spreading to the rest of the world. With distillation it was slaves in a Caribbean sugar plantation who discovered that fermentation and distillation of sugar molasses could result to making of rum.
Since time rum has always been associated with piracy.
