We’re back again with another Yummy obsession and this month it’s all about caramel. Why caramel? More like, why not caramel? We’ve all indulged in gloriously appetizing salted caramel desserts and even ice cream so we want to push it a notch higher. By the time the month comes to an end, you’ll not only have learned a lot but will be craving this special confectionary more than you’d want to. It’s okay to indulge every now and then.
We picked up a few spots where you can get the best salted caramel desserts. Some suggestions are from a foodie we love and have worked with, J Mwai and others are from our team member Rachel. Enjoy!
Le Grenier a Pain
Since opening its doors, the ornately set Le Grenier à Pain has quickly gained a reputation for being the home of delectable French pastry. Their salted caramel tart is a tale of sheer goodness. The shell of the tart is an amazing Almond Sablé cookie that holds in the gooey filling. Just the right dash of ‘Fleur de Sel’ (French sea salt) is what Pastry Chef Agnes Ooko adds on her caramel mixture to give it the perfect seasoning and taste. Depending on what’s in season; assorted berries, mini macaroons or even pecan nuts can be a choice for garnishing.

Delia’s
It’s enticing enough that all the flavours of Delia’s All Natural Ice Cream are made from scratch using locally sourced produce. Proprietor, Delia Brown shares that Delia’s salted caramel ice cream is their most popular flavour and from the way the ice cream. They uniquely whip up their caramel sauce from scratch, add sea salt and blend it into their vanilla ice cream. Ingredients used include milk, cream, sugar, eggs, salt and acacia tree gum.

Java House
Back in the day, a gentleman called Dimitris Vakondios accidentally discovered Frappé; an iced blended coffee beverage topped with ice cream. So when you enjoy your mug of delish Java Caramel Frappé, you’ll feel like the foodie in me is rightfully paying homage to this lad. Java’s smooth and rich Frappé menu also includes Coffee Latte, Coffee Vanilla and Mocha Frappé. The caramel frappe boasts a rich caramel flavour with coffee, blended with ice and a generous topping of whipped cream.

From the layers of moist chocolate cake to the soft crumbly texture… don’t even get us started on the caramel which is just pure bliss in your mouth. To enjoy this heavenly delight, head over to any Artcaffe branch and get yourself one among many other incredibly scrummy desserts Artcaffe has to offer. About Thyme
It’s a cozy restaurant that is perfect for a fine dining experience but with a twist as it has a beautiful garden setting that is absolutely stunning and perfect for date nights. At one point we’ve all heard of and maybe for some tried caramel popcorn but About Thyme has taken it up a notch with their Salted caramel Banana Popcorn Sundae. It’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty sweetness but with a bit of crunch to it and what you definitely need to beat this Nairobi heat. This dessert goes for Ksh 750.

Tiramisu Bakery
Tiramisu is a fancy bakery that has perfected the art of authentic Italian pastries and desserts from the taste to the aesthetics. One of my personal favourites has to be their salted caramel cake and we at times switch it up with their iced caramel macchiato! What makes them even better is the fact that they do custom cakes, caramel cake slices and more so if you want an extraordinary cake that fits your imagination, definitely check them out and grab some of their delicious treats while at it. Their Macchiato goes for Ksh 300 and their caramel cake slice goes for Ksh 350.

Coldstone
Talking of desserts, we can’t possibly forget Cold Stone’s banana caramel crunch which is the best balance between sweet and crunchy. Coldstone is a creamery that allows you to create your own signature ice cream from a wide range of flavours and toppings from sprinkles to chocolates to Oreos. The ice cream is rich in flavour and unforgettably. What makes it better is that you can order it online and enjoy it in the comforts of your home and it’s also a great spot for an ice cream date, thank us later!

The Bastard Baker
You’ve not lived until you’ve had a treat from The Bastard Baker. They’ve given us delectable brownies, cookies and doughnuts. Their salted caramel brownies are made of milk chocolate, finished off with lashings made of salted caramel sauce. The picture speaks volumes about the kind of quality you’ll be getting and it’s hard to resist anything from The Bastard Baker, we’ve been trying. Don’t let the month pass you by without you treating yourself.

Tea & Cake Pop Up
When’s the last time you had tea with a caramel cupcake? We know a place in Mombasa; Tea & Cake Pop up store. You will fall in love with their signature caramel red velvet cupcakes. They label themselves as the ‘original cuppie love’ outlet and it’s easy to see why. Their pastries give you that little tease of a sugar rush and we recommend treating yourself this month if you’re at the coast.

Sugar Baked
Cookies, chocolates, cakes and everything nice! This is what you’re getting at this popular bakery that we’ve all come to love. You will fall in love more with their pumpkin blondies! And what are they? Pumpkin cupcakes with some caramel drip. It doesn’t get any better than that, does it? It’s all about patting your back this month with all the good things from the very best places and Sugar Baked is one place serving the best.
