“Ready, set, BAKE!” Avid fans of pastries and other baked goods may already be familiar with The Great British Bake Off and this phrase that gets all the pots and baking tins moving in the iconic Bake Off tent. The Yummy Team are already big fans of the show so we were lucky enough to attend the launch of The Great Kenyan Bake Off at Le Grenier à Pain.
Guests from Unga Group including General Manager, Andanje Mwairumba and Managing Director, Nick Hutchinson, Standard Group Head of Department (CM&C) Irene Kimani, food lovers and the Bake Off project team all gathered under the ambient lighting at Le Grenier a Pain to officially launch The Great Kenyan Bake Off.
The show follows 12 amateur bakers over the course of 10 weeks as they go through a series of baking challenges all in a bid to find the next Great Kenyan Baker. Previous winners have included a debt collector, a social worker and a law graduate. Amber Prior, from the QBF Production team, made this clear as she took the guests through a brief introduction of the concept of the show and how the application process shall run.
At the launch, Host Mwikali introduced the audience to Chef Nick from the Hilton (JKIA) and Chef Agnes from Le Grenier a Pain. Both chefs took the audience through simple steps on how to make sure you bake the right cupcakes and what each flour in Unga’s wide range of EXE flours is used for.
In between all of this, Chef Nick took enthusiastic participants from the crowd through short baking related competitions which saw two winners emerge after winning a cupcake decorating competition and the other an ingredient tasting competition. Everyone was a winner, however, at the end of the night with each attendee receiving a hamper from Unga which included an apron, flour and rice.
The night was appropriately capped off with a delicious 3 layer cake courtesy of Le Grenier à Pain which was almost instantly devoured by the attendees. Managing Director, Nick Hutchinson, Standard Group Head of Department (CM&C) Irene Kimani and Amber Prior from the QBF Production team cut the cake to officially launch the call to action for applications.
