The restaurant Abu Ghosh is located in the town of the same name, just outside of Jerusalem and it was opened in 1993.
Ibrahim decided to offer the discount when he saw diners or couples sitting in silence, staring at their devices and eventually requesting for their food to be reheated.
Ibrahim said that ‘smartphones have ruined the modern dining experience.’ By offering the generous discount, he hopes diners will be encouraged to socialize more with one other during meal times instead of continuously checking their devices
Ibrahim may not be the first restaurant owner to offer discounts in exchange for customers turning off their phones, but other restaurants around the would usually offer a lower rate of discount.
The restaurateur confesses that since he started offering the discount, more diners have taken advantage of the offer, making his restaurant have a financial hit.
Ibrahim believes that the promotion will pay off in the long run and bring in more customers.
It is our hope after the Nairobi Restaurant Week where diners have been experiencing food serving under a specialized set menu, the restaurants in Nairobi will adopt such offers.
